LET THERE BE LIGHT: SAINT SIMONS LIGHTHOUSE

Image
The St. Simons Lighthouse and Keeper’s Dwelling were built in 1868-1872, replacing an earlier light station destroyed during the American Civil War. The brick tower still serves as an Active Aid to Navigation and houses the original third order Fresnel lens. Designed and manufactured in France, the lens casts its beam 23 miles out to sea. The Dwelling was home to lighthouse keepers and their families until the light was automated in the mid-1950s. In1975, the Dwelling became a museum of coastal history, operated by the Coastal Georgia Historical Society. In 1804, John Couper, owner of Cannon’s Point Plantation, deeded four acres of land at the southern end of St. Simons to the Federal government as the site for a lighthouse. In May 1807, James Gould was awarded the contract to build the St. Simons Lighthouse. James Gould moved south in the 1790s to survey timber. In 1810, President James Madison appointed Gould to serve as the first keeper of the lighthouse. Gould acquired a cotto...

Bahamas Is Great This Time Of Year!!

Image
I had the honor of meeting a special person the other day and his name is Jaelin Williams, a former soccor player and graduate of Brunswick High School. Jaelin grew up in Brunswick, Georgia and was on the first Coastal Outreach Soccer travel team where he’s spent countless hours playing soccer. From what I was told, Williams was asked to return to the Bahamas to join the men’s national soccer team for a training camp in preparation for the first round of World Cup qualifiers. As a member of the team, Jaelin is playing among some of the best soccer players in the Bahamas and in the world. “I felt a sigh of relief, like OK I can relax now that the phone call is over,” he recalled, during a call from the Bahamas in between practices, with clear blue skies and green trees swaying in the background. He was so excited when he got the news. When he arrived in the Bahamas, the other players were already stuck to a schedule of two practices a day, early every morning and each evening, befo...

MAKING HISTORY 2021

Image
Words can not express how much me, and my alumni nation feel about the 2021 Brunswick High Boys Soccor team this year. Now I'm not gone lie, I'm not the biggest soccor fan, and recording the games was a great opportunity for filming. As the season progress while watching these young men put it all on the field has been an amazing experience. They have definitely open my eyes to the sport or soccor and I'm also becoming a new fan. But back to the reason for this post. The boys team has been making history all year. This has by far been the best team put together in our school's history. Currently with a 8-2 record as I write this, this is the best record in school history. This year I go to witness the ending of a winning streak. A few weeks ago, they won for the very first time in school history against our crosstown rivals the Glynn Academy Terrors. Yes, you read that right, the very first time in school history. I could not believe that in the 60+ years this school h...

The Best At It!!

ReShard Lee is a former football running back in the NFL for the Cowboys, Packers and Raiders. And he's also a good friend of mine, and an alumni of my high school Brunswick High Mighty Pirates. Lee was one of the top athletes in the state of Georgia during his tenure. At the time he was our quarterback. He led our team to the state championship game, but unfortunately we fell short. But it doesn't take away the success the football team had while he was under center. As a senior, he passed for 1,600 yards and 18 touchdowns, while running for 670 yards and 8 touchdowns, contributing to 14 straight wins. He received honorable-mention in the USA Today All-American, Class AAAA first team and WTOC-TV Player of the Year honors. After the end of the season was done, he finished his high school career with 4,175 passing yards, 56 passing touchdowns and 73 rushing touchdowns, and breaking many records in the process. 101 Reshard Lee Photos and Premium High Res Pictures - Getty Images

THE SHOW MUST GO ON!!!

Image
The Ritz Theater has been a staple of history in the city of Brunswick. Many performances and plays have happen here. There have even been many comedy shows as well. The Ritz is located in the old town are of Brunswick, Georgia, or downtown area. The Ritz was built in 1899 in order to house the grand opera house, retails stores, and the general offices of the Brunswick & Birmingham Railroad. In this present time, downtown Brunswick's historic Ritz Theater and Arts Center features yearly live performances, films, exhibits, educational programs, and so much more. The Ritz Theater's programming and management are done by both the Golden Isles Arts and Humanities Association, and the Coordinating Arts Council for the city of Brunswick and Glynn County. The Ritz still is standing better and strong as each day goes by. Not only is it a great place for the arts, but its located right across from some of the finest places to eat. on in particular is the island jerk diner. But I ca...

Original First African Baptist Church

Image
I'm in disbelief that no matter where I search, I cant find any type of history of the church me and my family grew up in. I really going to have to do some research from old members or something. I grew up attending what we call First A.B Church. Praising God every Sunday, bible study on Wednesdays, and whatever else is going on during the week, of course we had to be there. Because I was a child at the time, and when grandma goes you go, and if you had a grandma in the church, then you already know how that goes. But back to the story. First African Baptist Church, from what I remember is the old black church in my hometown of Brunswick, Georgia. The originally part of the church is still standing until this day, on top of added renovations and annex building over the years. First A.B. was established in 1863. The church has had it share of pastors including my pastor Reverend Pettibone and before him my godfather Reverend Wingard and many others. I have so many memories growing...

The video that shooked a city in disbelief and sadness. This is the story of a young man by the name of Ahmaud Arbery. Like most people, we've done things in the past that we weren't proud of. But none of that justifies what happen to Ahmaud in Feburary 2020. Arbery was shot and killed in the middle of the street while jogging through a predominately white neighborhood one afternoon. It was told to his mother and family that he was caught breaking and entering a home which led to his untimely death. Unbeknown, 2 months later, a video surface of what happen that day in his shooting. Not only were lies being spread, but it also showed the mismanagement of the case by police department, it's officers, and the district attorney(who's no longer in office). The cover-ups of this case was real, because of the shooters involved in the case. After the outrage of the city coming together, the murderers were finally arrested and have been sitting in jail ever since waiting on tria...

Brunswick Pirates C/O 2021

Image
What a year for the Brunswick High Pirates Football Seniors Class of 2021. Last season was a great one even though we lost in the second round of state playoffs. For the past 6 years we have lost to cross town rivals Glynn Academy High School an this past season, this senior class ended the streak with a late 4th quarter score to win the game in the most epic of ways. This class consisted of by end of season, 16 seniors with 10 signed so far to play college ball an the rest to sign be end of year. They have broken many records during their tenue hear and a looking forward to going even harder on the field and in the classrooms on the next level. Darius Slay is the defensive back for the Philadelphia Eagles. Considered one of the top DBs in the league, Darius has been name to the Pro Bowl twice in his career. Before entering the league, he played for Mississippi State University. An before then, yes that's right, my alma mater Brunswick High School. While here is was one of the top players not only on team, but as in region and state as well. Blessed with speed and agility, He was very hard to play against on both sides of the ball. until this day. He was a true athlete during his tenue here, and still is. He will be forever known as one of the greatest Pirates to ever put on that faithful blue and gold colors. His presence is always felt here, especially when he comes home and does his annual soccor camp for the area kids in the city.

#1 Draft Pick

Image
Kwame Brown was a center in the Natiinal Basketball League for a good 8+ years. Unfortunately due to injury that clotheslined his career for awhile, he was able to have a longer lengthly carrer. Kwame is another sports prodigy from my hometown Btunswick, Georgia. Kwame was one of the biggest( literally 7ft) high school players in the region and state. His play earned him national attention, including the likes of the G.O.A.T, The Micheal Air Jordan himself. Jordan was so impress by Kwame that he signed him to the #1 draft pick in the 2001 NBA draft to the Washington Wizards right after high school graduation. During his tenue in the league hes played with different teams including one of my favorites, the Los Angeles Lakers along side one of my favorite players, Kobe Bryant(RIP). After the NBA, he joined the Big 3 League which was created by rapper/actor Ice Cube. During his time in big 3 he won a championship. Now Kwame is close back home and during that time hes opened up his own res...

Battle Of Bloody Marsh

Image
The Battle of Bloody Marsh  took place July 1974 between the British  and Spanish  forces here on Saint Simons Island , which is part of Brunswick, Georgia , which ended in victory for the British. This particular battle was one of many of the War of Jenkins Ear. T he battle was for the British fortifications of Fort Federica  and Fort St. Simons, with the main goal of controlling the sea routes and inland waters in the Province. With the victory, the Province of Georgia established undisputed claim to the island. It is now part of the U.S. state of Georgia . The British also won the Battle of Gully Hole Creek , which took place on the island the same day. Atlantic Ocean, Coast of Georgia
